Someone at work sent around an email on an early bird deal for ice skating at the Sydney Winter Festival. And so another someone grabbed two tickets and took me onto the rink right outside St. Mary's Cathedral on Independence Day which is the eve of my birthday eve. Yeah, another celebration to add to the list right after the Sydney Showboat Cruise.
Although it's claimed on their official website that the rink is 600 square metres big, I think it looks more like 200 square metres. Check out the picture below. Definitely too tiny for the crowds that turned up.
Even though the rink was too small, and there were like a thousand others trying to skate at the same time, I had lots of fun. The rink is not even half as impressive as the indoor one we have in Singapore but there is something quite magical about gliding extremely slowly on ice under a pink and purple sky while the sun sets and with the majestic cathedral looming in the background. Here's a shot of the two ice skaters among the thousand others.
The set-up at St. Mary's was only for the period 24th June to 4th July. But if you're keen to experience the Winter Festival, there is another outpost event “The Bondi Bergstation” located at Bondi Beach as a highlight of this festival from 16 to 26 July. You can purchase tickets here. Have fun!
