I love my orange capo.
It's been kept quite busy lately as I try to learn to strum Stand By Me by Ben E. King.
It is a fairly easy song to learn with only four chords: G, Em, C and D. My only difficulty is trying to connect C and D smoothly. For some unfathomable reason, I keep getting the fingering wrong for D - wrong fingers on the wrong strings. Must be a psychological thing.

almost lover
Went on a day trip yesterday with a rented car and CDs provided by one of the roadtrippers. Almost Lover caught my attention out of the 30 odd songs in a CD compilation we played a million times throughout the entire trip. It's such a sad sad song. First video below is the original version and the second a remixed version which I prefer. Went to search for the guitar chords the moment I got home. Hopefully I'll be able to play and sing it soon enough.
noob guide to playing sweet home alabama
In addition to the video posted in the previous entry on learning to play Sweet Home Alabama, I've found another useful video - see below. This guy beginnersguitar has some really cool and easy-to-follow tutorial vids for guitar noobs such as me. Check out all his youtube videos here. I find his tutorials on strumming especially useful. I have in mind to learn Stand By Me next. Seems easy enough on his vid. It's amazing how the interwebs has made self-learning so much easier.
sweet home alabama
I went for my 13th guitar lesson today. I had a hard time refreshing myself with the fingerings and catching up with the standard course progress the last two lessons because I didn't touch the guitar for an entire month when I took a holiday back home. I'm glad to say I'm back on track now following a few days of forced daily practices despite the fatigue after a long work day.
Today, my teacher taught me to play the guitar intro to Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd (what a name!). Because I am still such an amateur, we had to do it really slowly, like really really S--L--O--W--L--Y note by note such that I couldn't even tell it was the intro to this song. Hopefully I'll be able to string the notes all together at the normal speed and rhythm soon. Oh, I also learnt to do a 'pull-off' and a 'hammer-on' today. I let out a loud OOH and AAH and WOW and YAY when I successfully executed them which led to my teacher having a small giggle at my idiotic face - I couldn't help it; I was just so thrilled to be learning new tricks!

Oh and did I update that I can now pluck and sing at the same time a whole two verses of Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron and Wine right up to the chorus? Next I need to figure out how the strumming for the chorus goes. ^^

月亮代表我的心
I have added the above song - 月亮代表我的心 (literally translates to 'The Moon Represents My Heart') to my 'Ultimate Song List' due to a special request by Flyaway. I prefer this above version by Qi Qin to the original version by Theresa Teng because I find that he sings it with more feeling.
So I now have 12 songs on the list that I endeavour to learn and after four lessons with my tutor that mainly focused on the basics of picking, chords, scales and arpeggios, I'm beginning to include the intro for Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron and Wine in my daily practise sessions. Progress on this simple song so far has been satisfactory - I just need to try to gradually increase the tempo and yet maintain the smooth transition between the fingerings.
My tutor has gona on a three week break and I'll only resume my lessons from 9 Jan onwards. Meanwhile, I have to perfect six chords C, G7, G, D7, Am and E7, six sets of arpeggios for these chords, two scales, and the first two bars of the opening intro for Smoke on the Water before I see him again. Stressful hey?
smoke on the water
Went for my third guitar lesson yesterday and my tutor started to teach me to play the intro for this song - Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple. I was like OMG, isn't that a really difficult song to play? Apparently my tutor categorises his students into the juniors and the seniors by age not skill level and I actually fall into the 'seniors' group and Smoke on the Water is sort of the test song for us. I am so not going to be able to play it even with a thousand years of practice lah!
On the basics, I learnt another chord - the A minor, bringing the total number of chords I have to practise daily to five, and to scale the notes on all the six strings.
Learning a new instrument is a tough business!

I added the 11th song on my ultimate song list: Tears in Heaven. Here's Eric Clapton performing it live in NYC in 1999. Don't you think he looks better and better as he ages?
Early Saturday morning, I dragged my hungover (for 2 days) self to guitar class and learnt two more picking exercises, one more chord, and practised arpeggios on the chords C, G7 and G. I think I may start learning to strum next week.
My tutor Karl reviewed my ultimate song list and raised his eyebrows at some of my choices, particularly when his gaze stopped at Nothing Else Matters by Metallica - that was when his eyebrows disappeared under his hair. I was quite embarrassed. I wonder how long it will take me to even play one of those songs decently.
And oh... I can't quite feel the fingertips on my left hand now. Great. It means I am progressing! (I think)

Grabbed this off Angel's blog. Sibeh lian right? But ai rike. This is one for the Hokkien K song list to be perfected before I hit the shores of Sunny-pore in February next year. Who wants to go K with me?
ultimate song list
I went for my first guitar lesson today. It was fun! But wow, I hadn't expected to be given so much homework!
My tutor went through 3 picking and 3 chord exercises with me today. He then gave me a time sheet to log my self practise sessions which I have to show him every time we meet. For a start, I only need to log at least 10min a day everyday until my next lesson. He will gradually increase it to at least 30min daily. When I next see him again in a week's time, I must be able to do the picking exercise at a constant 60bpm (beats per minute), after which he will increase the requirement to 80bpm, 100bpm and finally to 170bpm. He will also test me on the 3 chords. *gasps*
Another piece of homework for the beginner me before next Saturday: I need to develop my 'Ultimate Song List' - a list of songs I dream of playing someday when I have mastered the basics and which he will slowly teach me, starting with the easiest on the list. I'll need to have 10 songs on my list to start off with, and I'll have to start gathering recordings and the notations / tabs for each song.

I have been playing this song on repeat mode in my car stereo for days now. Together with my fiery red baby's roar through her oversized exhaust, it sure gets the adrenaline pumpin' enough for me to display my race car driving skills.

Someone at work casually told me one day that there's been a lot of discussion going on in forums and Twilight fansites etc on how this song by Pink is perfect for the 'Edward leaves Bella' scene in New Moon - the second instalment of the Twilight Saga that will be hitting the big screens worldwide in a matter of days.
I love the song. And hey, the wordings in the chorus section are indeed perfect for the above said scene.
I can hear many of you there go: *Gasps* "Jac is into this whole Twilight shite too?" *Faints*
Okay. I am indeed quite embarrassed.
After seeing how so many of my friends have succumbed to this teenage romance trend (both the book and the movie), and not having anything I really wanted to read while browsing in Borders, I picked up the first book of Stephenie Meyer's bestselling Twilight series purely out of curiosity.
I hadn't been able to put it down and gave up an entire night's sleep to finish it. Six days later, I completed all four books in the series and the movie on top of a very busy work week jam packed with meetings. That was a lot of sleep lost. I amaze myself sometimes.
And my verdict?
1) The movie sucks. I'm referring to Twilight of course. The about-to-be-screened New Moon looks more promising from the trailer, but all trailers are made to impress, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I would probably go catch New Moon just for comparison's sake. I don't think Robert Pattinson is as hot as everyone says although he definitely looks better in his vampire self than in his human self IMHO. And they probably should send the whole cast to acting school or something.
2) The books are something else. I wouldn't say much about the language or writing style, what do you expect, it's YOUNG ADULT fiction. What I find intriguing is the many refreshing theories on vampires and werewolves. The one that took me most by surprise is the author's explanation for vampires avoiding sunlight; that had me chuckling and letting my imagination wander to visualise the whole 'Edward and Bella in the meadow' scene. I found the rendition of that scene (many scenes actually) in the movie extremely disappointing because I actually saw something more magnificent in my mind.
3) So what about the love-love romantic shite? I have never been into romance fiction much and was initially a bit put off by how much focus was placed on this area for this series. But after a while, I kinda got absorbed into the whole Cullen family bonding thing such that even the overplayed Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle became tolerable and got more enjoyable as I progressed to the 3rd book.
So if you have condemned this series just like I had initially, you may want to give it a chance after all. If you have near-zero tolerance for anything romantic, you'll probably need a bit of perseverence to be able to progress through the books to appreciate the sub plots and mythical storytelling before you get sucked into the world of vampires, werewolves and half-half beings.
